Cumulopuntia hystrix near El Tatio

Near El Tatio Cumulopuntia hystrix

High in the mountains in the north of Chile near El Tatio, not far from the Bolivian border, at around 4,600m (15,000ft) altitude, the scenery is spectacular with snowy peaks and steaming geysers. Despite the harsh conditions, including hard frosts on virtually every night of the year, cacti can still be found in the form of "hedgehog like" clumps of Cumulopuntia (Maihueniopsis) hystrix (pictured right).
