Ferocactus stainesii

Ferocactus stainesii

Ferocacti are native to Mexico and the southern states of the USA. In habitat they tend to grow  into fierce, strong spined columns, whereas in cultivation they usually stay more globular. With patience, several of them will flower in cultivation, but they do grow quite slowly and need to mature before they will oblige.
Care must be taken to keep Ferocacti clean in cultivation as they produce a sugary secretion from the near the areoles (in habitat this attracts colonies of ants) which if left can result in the formation of black sooty mould.

The pictured was taken in the Boyce Thompson Southwestern Arboretum, Arizona.
