Using the more traditional definition of Echinopsis, that is excluding Lobivias, Pseudolobivias and the like, this genus is usually defined by the white or pale pink, long tubed, nocturnal flowers. Extremely common in cultivation, these plants often do not get the attention they deserve. They are very tolerant, making them easy to grow, and if given good light and a dry, cold (they are frost hardy), winter rest they will flower prolifically. Their flower buds seem to grow as you watch as the flowering time approaches, eventually opening late on a summer's evening. In cultivation, the strongly sweet scented flowers usually last for about 36 hours before collapsing.
Many colourful hybrids are also readily available.
