Chamaecereus silvestrii

Generally accepted as being a Lobivia, the name Chamaecereus silvestrii has been retained here for the benefit of beginners, as that is the name by which it still most often sold. It is extremely easy to propagate from cuttings, very difficult to kill - it will survive being baked in summer, frozen solid in winter (provided it is kept dry) and has been seen tolerating (but not enjoying) very wet conditions. Add to that its annual profusion of showy flowers (all the more prolific if it is over-wintered very dry and cold, but in good light) and it is hard to see why this plant falls out of favour with many growers who consider it just for novices. Accepted there is little or no challenge to growing it, but its flowers alone should earn it plenty of respect!

As well as the species from northern Argentina, many colourful hybrids are also available.
