Orbea variegata
Orbea variegata Orbea variegata
Orbea variegata is probably the most common Asclepiad in cultivation, though it is still often seen under its former name of Stapelia variegata. It is quite free flowering and, if in direct sunlight, they can be some of the smellier flowers! It is another of the South African succulents, coming from Cape Province.

The plant can readily set seed and, as can be seen from the right hand picture, these need to be contained when they ripen, else they can float from the pods and drift around the greenhouse on the slightest breeze! Like most Asclepiads the seeds germinate readily provided they are sown when fresh.
